The three foundational films
These three are all here, and between them they basically invented the genre.
Don't Look Back, 1967. Pennebaker following Dylan on a British tour at the exact moment he was deciding whether to keep explaining himself to anyone. The cue card sequence for Subterranean Homesick Blues became one of the first music videos ever made. What makes it endure is the tension. Dylan is charming and exhausting and clearly working out how much access he is willing to give, all in real time.
Gimme Shelter, 1970. The Maysles brothers and Charlotte Zwerin with the Stones in 1969, ending at Altamont. It is famous for the violence and you will see why, but the strange pleasure of it is watching a film crew realize mid shoot that they are recording the end of an era. The editing reflects that. The film keeps rewinding and slowing down the moment, as if it cannot quite believe it either.

Monterey Pop, 1968. Pennebaker again, at the 1967 festival. Hendrix setting his guitar alight, Joplin with Big Brother, Otis Redding winning over a crowd that had come for someone else. Short and completely alive. It set the template that every concert film since has followed.
The modern essentials
Kurt Cobain, Montage of Heck, 2015. Morgen's authorized portrait, built from Cobain's own journals and home recordings. It is on Max and on Hulu, so you may already have it.

It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley, 2025. Part of HBO's Music Box series and one of the best things the network has done recently. Buckley has been covered plenty of times and this finds angles others missed.
Tina, 2021. Tina Turner telling her own story, including the parts she has spent a lifetime deciding how much of to share. Unsparing and ultimately a triumph.
George Harrison, Living in the Material World, 2011. Scorsese taking his time with the quiet Beatle. Three hours that make a strong case for him being the most interesting one.
Buena Vista Social Club, 1999. Cuban musicians in their seventies and eighties getting recorded at the end of their lives, and the record becoming a global hit. It is joyful and it is also quietly heartbreaking.
Luther, Never Too Much, 2024. Dawn Porter finally gives Luther Vandross the full treatment. His voice deserved this.
The Music Box series
This is HBO's documentary anthology and it is the most reliably good thing on the service for music. Each episode is a self contained film about a different subject.
Season one and two together have covered Yacht Rock, Jason Isbell, Counting Crows, Jeff Buckley, Wizkid, and a children's music special. Yacht Rock, A Dockumentary is the surprise favorite, ninety five minutes on how a joke from a two thousand five web series turned into a genre people now take seriously. It has a ninety one percent critics score and it earns it.
Jagged, the Alanis Morissette episode, is interesting for a different reason. Morissette called the finished film reductive and skipped the premiere. Watching it knowing that adds a layer the film did not intend.
