First Look: Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in ‘Public Enemies’

November 30, 2008

Filed under: Drama, Fandom, Johnny Depp, Motion picture Marketing, Images

We’ve seen a few photos from the set, but Empire has snagged the first official images from Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in what has to be one of the most anticipated on-screen match-ups of 2009. In the flick, which is based on the book by Bryan Burrough, Bale will portray FBI agent Melvin Purvis, who, under the guidance of J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), waged a full-on war against the country’s most notorious (and successful) criminals — namely John Dillinger (Depp), Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum) and Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham). It’s a pretty wild true story, and one Mann and his cast should have a ball with. Check out an image of Bale after the jump, and the full images in this month’s issue of Empire Magazine.

Weston Coppola Cage totally doesn’t need his last name to get chicks, no way

November 30, 2008

1129_nicolas_cage_family_00.JPG Nicolas Cage posed for this family pic in Vienna, Austria this day with his wife Alice Kim and son Weston Coppola Cage. Weston brought his girlfriend along who I really want to believe isn’t jockeying for that sweet Ghost Rider dough. Maybe she simply digs dudes who think dead fetuses make kickass necklaces. Who knows? Then again, she did just score a free trip to Vienna with Nathan Explosion here, so yeah…. NOTE: I’m getting axed in the face tonight, aren’t I? Sweet.

A new trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek has just debuted over at AICN, but be warned that it’s exactly like the other trailer save for one particular scene that comes right at the end. Yup, I won’t tell you exactly what happens, but one look at the image above and you can envision what you’ll see. This particular scene was part of the four Cinematical screened last week, and it takes place on the icy planet where Kirk (Chris Pine) gets sent to. It’s there where he meets an older version of Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) and a younger version of Scotty (Simon Pegg). Check out the trailer over at AICN. Star Trek hits theaters on May 8.

Hollywood Goes Bollywood

November 29, 2008

Could you see Paul Scrader in Bollywood? See, this is much more than merely Hollywood delighting in all things Bollywood. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Paul Schrader, the pen behind Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, is heading to Mumbai to helm a Bollywood action flick called Extreme City.

What’s convinced him to head overseas? He says: “I’ve been getting indie movies made for 20 years. But I take a good look around and what I see is a barren, barren place — in terms of the financial community, in terms of audiences, in terms of distribution. It’s cold out there.” So in this non-barren Bollywood, what will he direct? It’s the story of an American man who goes to India to assist in the resolution of a kidnapping case for his father-in-law, and gets stuck in a gangster plot. Schrader admits that there will be a mix of dialogue and musical numbers, but it’s “not a Masala motion picture.”

Hey, guys, I’ll be taking off the next two days for some R&R, but The Superficial will return to its regularly scheduled posting on Saturday Nov. 29. For those who haven’t noticed: Yes, Virginia, there’s posting on the weekends now. Whee! In the meantime, here’s pics of Kim Kardashian who’s thankful this year for paparazzi that don’t always go for the ass shot and, as usual, O.J. Simpson’s prior access to knives. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

Trailer Park: Wrestling With The Truth About Trek

Trailers? Oh yeah, we got your trailers here.

Star Trek
Like a lot of people, I got my first glimpse of this one when it played with Quantam of Solace last weekend. While this will obviously play hell with Star Trek continuity, I am one Trek geek who is looking forward to the J.J. Abrams take on the franchise. It opens on Might 8.

Astro Boy
Here’s a teaser for the CGI animated adaptation of the classic anime about a robot boy built by a scientist to replace the son he lost. The trailer doesn’t give us much to go on, but the impressive voice cast includes Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Donald Sutherland, Eugene Levy, and Nathan Lane. Things get cosmic on October 23.

Beyonce, I don’t think I am ready for this jelly

November 28, 2008

Beyonce performed on The Today Show this morning, and I don’t know sign language, but I’m pretty sure I have the ability to decipher the message being delivered here: “Kim Kardashian, it’s on. My ghetto booty vs. your buttpad. Downtown LA. November 29. 6-8 PM. (On account of rain, butt-off will be moved indoors.) Bring a covered dish.” Again, no sign language expert. But I think I caught the gist. Video after the jump.

Britney Spears starving herself for British TV performance

November 27, 2008

Britney Spears (seen here in Frankfurt, Germany yesterday) is “crash dieting” to drop at least seven pounds before performing on X Factor this weekend, according to the Daily Mail:

A source said: ‘She goes to bed hungry and is dieting so hard she’s suffering from insomnia, anxiety, flushes and shakes. Her dad and the people around her are trying to get her to eat more, but Britney is determined not to be criticised for having any extra bulk.’
