Why She’s About to Pop: This 20-year-old singer-songwriter was born Jessica Charlotte Poland, but took on the moniker of ‘Charlotte Sometimes’ from Penelope Farmer’s children’s book of the same name. As an adopted child not knowing much about her background, she sought an identity through the arts — dance and musical theater — but it was at age 14 when she picked up the guitar and found out who she truly was. Six years later, Charlotte Sometimes has released her major-label debut album, ‘Waves and the Both of Us,’ which is not only a reference to Farmer’s book, but also touches upon “the different waves that live inside my head and heart, and how they affect others, myself, and the person I want or pretend to be,” she states. Charlotte Sometimes is currently on the Vans Warped Tour through August 17.

Three Questions with Charlotte Sometimes:

What inspired the songs on your record?

I was inspired by so many different things — leaving my home for the first time, moving to NYC and breaking up with a not so great boyfriend.

What’s your favorite song on the record?

It used to be ‘Army Men,’ but I think it’s ‘Losing Sleep’ right now. It still relates to what I’m going through in this industry and the troubles I’ve in my life.

What did you think life as a musician would be like when you first started out and how does it compare to what it’s really like for you now?

I never really thought about it too much, but I don’t think I realized how much work it is and how physically and mentally draining it can be at times. But overall it’s worth it!
