Geek Daily: ‘Ghostbusters 3′, Secret Marvel Projects, and Gasps From ‘Justice League Mortal’

We end the week with all kinds of intriguing possibilities and rumors — try to contain your joy at the Ghostbusters 3 bit, especially if you’re at work. We can’t have your employers finding out you’re reading Cinematical on the clock!

  • Bill Murray is at Fantastic Fest, undoubtedly partying with our writers and promoting City of Ember and at the film’s Q&A, AICN’s Kraken (a stellar guy) asked the question we all wanted the answer too — would Murray return for Ghostbusters 3? Murray thinks the scriptwriters (borrowed, you’ll remember, from The Office) are off to a good begin, that enough time has passed to heal the Ghostbusters 2 wounds, and he would definitely be open to playing Peter Venkman again. In fact, his enthusiasm for the franchise was rekindled by recording the voice for the upcoming video game — and he had even been singing the theme song in public. There’s video of Murray’s answer up at AICN, so check it out, and get your hopes up.

Shane Black Returns as a ‘Cold Warrior’

September 30, 2008

I would be a big dork if I began this post with the sentence, “This is the ideal news ever,” but it kind of is. One of my favorite (and yours too) scriptwriters is making a return to the massive screen — and may it be a triumphant one. According to Variety, Shane Black is directing Cold Warrior for Universal Pictures from a script penned by Chuck Mondry. This will be his second outing as a director — his first was, of course, the fantastic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

And frankly, Warrior sounds like a film from the heyday of 80’s action. It centers on a spy from the Cold War era who comes out of retirement and teams up with a younger agent to thwart a Russian domestic terrorism plot. It couldn’t be more timely given how icy relations are with our Eastern neighbors. (The Russians didn’t get to take much of a break from big-screen villainy, did they? I thought their comeback would just arrive via the Russian Mafia, not as terrorists again.)

Kendra Wilkinson and the other ‘Girls’ exodus explained

September 30, 2008

If you thought the recent Wall Street crash was bad (How ’bout that Dow this day?), speak to Hugh Hefner: It’s costing him pussy. The recent credit crunch has forced the Playboy founder to reduce staff which fully, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt because they’re prostitutes explains why Kendra Wilkinson (above), Holly Madison and Bridgett Marquardt are jumping ship. The Daily Telegraph reports:

The 83-year-old has been told to lay off some of his staff at his Los Angeles and New York offices as soon as this month or go bankrupt.
The company has recently seen shares fall from £6.20 to £1.55. An insider at the company told the Daily Star that bosses had been aware of the worsening situation for “a while”.
“Only the top brass has known for a while how bad things have been for Hef recently.”
Spokeswoman Elizabeth Austin wouldn’t confirm the sackings, saying: “It is our policy not to comment on corporate matters such as employee issues.”

Travis Barker checking out of hospital in two weeks

September 29, 2008

0926_travis_barker_sc_00.JPG Travis Barker is doing well and “feeling the love” from fans, according to his business partner Jermaine Dupri. Travis, along with DJ AM, are in the hospital after suffering severe burns when they escaped a plane crash that left four of his friends dead. People reports:

Barker’s improved spirits could be due to his newly outfitted hospital room: “He’s just now getting everything in the hospital set up for him – iPods, computers, everything that he needs,” says Dupri, who estimates Barker will be in the hospital another two weeks. “You got to make sure he’s comfortable.”

Discuss: Rose McGowan Has Offended a Lot of Irish People

September 29, 2008

Filed under: Drama, New Releases, Celebrities and Controversy, Politics, Toronto International Film Festival

I guess when you make a motion picture about the Irish Republican Army and Northern Ireland’s infamous “Troubles,” you’re bound to court some controversy. Fifty Dead Men Walking, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival despite legal threats from the man whose life it’s based on (he has since dropped his suit), has now drawn more fire because of comments made by one of its stars, Rose McGowan.

During an interview in Toronto last week, McGowan, who plays an IRA operative in the film and whose father is Irish, said: “I envision, had I grown up in Belfast, I would 100 percent have been in the IRA…. My heart just broke for the cause. Violence isn’t to be played out daily and provide an answer to problems, but I understand it.”

The last time Angelina Jolie received an Oscar nod was for playing a mental patient in 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, for which she took home the statue for Best Supporting Actress. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, consider this: Winona Ryder — and not Jolie — was a box-office draw back then.

Heidi & Spencer work in a soup kitchen, practice their sad faces (FAIL)

September 28, 2008

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt of The Hills pretended to be people who shouldn’t be launched into space yesterday by volunteering at the Union Rescue Mission in LA. The two served meals to the homeless while attempting to look deeply concerned about the plight of the less fortunate. That lasted all of about two seconds before Heidi and Spencer started posing over the mashed potatoes. Jesus, don’t hobos stab anybody anymore? There used to be a thing called “tradition” in this country.

Captain Jack Officially Returns, and Signs On for Tonto Too!

With the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it was pretty much inevitable that more would come our way. But it wasn’t all signed, dotted, and crossed until now. Variety reports that Johnny Depp has finally signed on for a fourth film. I have the ability to only hope that this time around, he gets the passion and the girl. Or at the very least, I hope she doesn’t pick a bland dude who lacks charisma and chemistry instead. Ick.

Discuss: Should They Keep the Line “Bond, James Bond”?

September 27, 2008

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Newsstand, James Bond, Remakes and Sequels, Daniel Craig

It pains me that I can’t go into every tiny fantastic detail when it comes to my recent Bond-related trip across the pond, but trust me when I state Quantum of Solace will definitely be one film you won’t want to miss this fall. And if I go any further, the studio might just serve my head on a platter during the flick’s premiere after party. But would I taste like chicken? Anyway, as we shared with you yesterday, Daniel Craig and Marc Forster were making the international rounds over in London late last week (where we sat down for a chat) and the Independent learned from Forster that a couple classic Bond one-liners won’t be included in the upcoming Quantum of Solace.
