The Supernatural Panel - Comic-Con Report

The cast of Supernatural at Comic-Con 2008

For most of my time at Comic-Con the Television show panels had a fairly diverse audience, with an equal amount of men and women. However, during the Sunday morning panels for Smallville and Supernatural I noticed a significant female shift in the audience. This was definitely prominent with Supernatural. Of course, being that the main characters of Sam and Dean (played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) are hot it’s understandable. Well, at least that what I observed…I just think they’re cute.

SDCC ‘08 Panel: ‘Terminator: Salvation’

This was one of the panels I was most looking forward to because I desperately wanted to walk away from it with even more good vibes than I already had. Though I still chuckled each time someone prefaced a question with “This is for McG …,” the guy definitely “brought it” to Comic Con. You could tell this dude really wanted to sell the audience; he wanted to sell them on another Terminator flick, he wanted to sell them on it being directed by a dude named McG and he wanted to bottle up his enormous energy and sell that too. The guy was amped up to a level just beneath “Okay this is uncomfortable,” and the panel audience was virtually high-fiving him the entire time.

About to Pop: Katy Perry

July 29, 2008

Filed under: Pop, About to Pop

Who: Katy Perry
Album: ‘One of the Boys’
Video: ‘I Kissed a Girl’
Hails From: Santa Barbara, Calif.
For Fans Of: Gwen Stefani and Alanis Morissette

Why She’s About to Pop: This 23-year-old’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics are what probably got the likes of Perez Hilton to call her “one of the breakout stars of the summer.” While the daughter of two pastors was brought up singing gospel, Katy credits Queen with inspiring her own musical pursuits. Perry worked with a slew of top-notch pop producers to create her debut album, including Glen Ballard, Max Martin and Butch Walker. The result is an explosion of groovy beats and tart lyrics that take a concentrated effort to forget. In addition to her increasing modeling and acting gigs (she appeared on ‘The Young and Restless’), Perry will be hitting the road this summer on the entirety of the Vans Warped Tour.

Britney Spears spending $22,000/month to stop looking perpetually pregnant

July 29, 2008

Thumbnail image for 0728_britney_spears_bikini_05.jpg Britney Spears is dropping a ton of coin to, scientifically talking, tighten that ass up. She’s spending roughly $22 grand a month on a personal trainer, nutritionist and dance choreographer. Britney was getting sick of the constant pregnancy rumors, so she decided to do something about it that, surprisingly, didn’t involve flashing her vagina at a Whopper. Wow, she has changed. The Daily Mail reports:

She has also taken on some of Victoria Beckham’s diet tips, eating plenty of steamed fish and snacking on edamame beans. Britney also endures intensive work-outs with Pussycat Dolls’ personal trainer James Van Daff as well as three-hour dance classes six times a week.
The source added: ‘Britney piled on a lot of weight earlier this year. She was so stressed about the custody case and her medication for her bipolar disorder also made her put on weight. She was fatigued of being flabby and wanted to do something about it.’
Now, states the insider: ‘Britney is so proud of herself because her ab muscles are back. She’s feeling better than she has in ages.’

Fan Rant: Critics of ‘The Dark Knight’ Are Allowed to Hate

July 29, 2008

Filed under: Action, Drama, Casting, New Releases, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Columns

Look, I thought The Dark Knight had a lot of strong selling points: Combine a deft pace with thoughtful characterizations and a whopping IMAX design that turns the entire experience into a plot-driven theme park ride, and you’ve got one hefty dose of Batman adrenaline.

Still, comparisons to The Godfather Part II notwithstanding, The Dark Knight isn’t foolproof — in fact, no single movie in history is foolproof. The subjective experience of motion picture watching ensures that nothing can be universally liked by everyone, and rules of civility insist that humanity respect that truism. It’s acceptable to feel passionately about a great work of art, and defend that perspective with rigorous argumentation, but much of the outrage over the minority perspective that The Dark Knight isn’t any good has made such practical thinking impossible.

‘Ghostbusters’ Video Game Trailer!

July 29, 2008

Filed under: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Games and Game Movies

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the upcoming Ghostbusters video game (we’ve talked about it here and here), and how this was as close as we were going to get to a Ghostbusters III since, well, it was an all new story and all four Ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson) were reprising their roles (in voice form) for the game. Not only that, but Annie Potts, William Atherton and Brian Doyle-Murray lent their voices too. Sadly, both Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis did not join the party. The script for the game was written by Ramis and Aykroyd (who wrote both Ghostbusters live-action movies), and, well, a lot of your favorite ghosts (like Slimer, Gozer, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Vigo) will make an appearance, along with a brand new enemy.

Heidi Klum will host the Emmys?

July 29, 2008

Filed under: American Idol, Survivor, Celebrities, Project Runway, Dancing With The Stars, Awards, Emmys

Heidi Klum - Project Runway and host of the EmmysIndeed she will, but she’ll have some help. In a change born of trying to keep current with the say of TV today, the Emmys will be hosted by the five nominees in the Reality Television Host category. Klum will share hosting duties with Ryan Seacrest, Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel, and (the man that should win it all) Tom Bergeron.

It’s a great idea. The standard formula of these shows is something just asking to be shaken up. Klum is probably the biggest question mark here, for the simple fact that she has Tim Gunn to handle much of the unscripted action. I’ll be curious to see how she handles the role, and I’m confident that the rest of the nominees will be just fine. The linked article also has a great stat. The average audience of the five nominated shows has been as high as 70 million. Jiminy. The broadcast takes place Sept. 21st, on ABC.
