Mary-Kate Olsen throws Spencer Pratt under the bus on Letterman
June 29, 2008

Mary-Kate Olsen stopped by Letterman last night to promote her new film The Wackness where she talked about spending her 22nd birthday at Bonnaroo, making out with Ben Kinglsey and not wanting her kids to be child actors. She then brought up going to high school with Spencer Pratt who Dave mentioned is a tiny “wormy.” I guess that’s showbiz speak for “epic assclown.” Good to know:
Mary-Kate: He does not have a good temper. He walked out of a few games. He would walk off the field. He was like, ‘Me or the coach!’
Dave: Were you friends with the guy at the time?
Mary-Kate: No.
Dave: Because I’m surprised about the soccer. Because looking at the guy, he looks like a guy that has never broken a sweat, I would guess.
Mary-Kate: Oh, my God — that brings up stories! I don’t know if I should talk about it.
Dave: No, c’mon, let’s hear one. Let’s go.
Mary-Kate: [laughs] The Wackness is a great film.
Dave: What I don’t understand is how does a kid that age, and he’s only in his 20s or maybe even your age, how does a kid like that get to be so oily?
Mary-Kate: It’s a mystery to me.

Steve Carell scored huge this week recreating the role of Agent Maxwell Smart in Get Smart, providing the best opening weekend ever for a film with Carell in the lead. The Astounding Hulk fell into second place for its second week but Hulk and Kung Fu Panda both outdid last week’s other new release The Love Guru. Here are the totals:
1. Get Smart: $38.6 million
2. The Extraordinary Hulk: $22.1 million
3. Kung Fu Panda: $21.9 million
4. The Love Guru: $13.9 million
5. The Happening: $10.5 million
Two wide releases this week, a heartwarming comedy for the whole family and a stylized action adventure shoot-em-up for the older crowd.
WALL-E
What’s It All About: Disney/Pixar is back with the tale of a lovable sentient trash compactor. WALL-E has been alone on the abandoned Planet Earth for hundreds of years, but he discovers a new purpose when he meets a robot named EVE. Apparently WALL-E has stumbled upon the key to the planet’s future, a solution which the human race eagerly awaits.
Why It Might Do Well: The trailers look promising and WALL-E is written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who served in the same capacity on Finding Nemo, Pixar’s most financially successful film to date. Plus, our star has the adorable going on.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Science fiction writer Isaac Asimov described a condition called The Frankenstein Complex, which is a fear of robots — but look at the tiny guy. Did I mention he’s cute? This is easily next week’s number one flick.
Number of Theaters: 3,900
Prediction: $70 million

Proof that The Real World caused the downfall of MTV
June 29, 2008

I’m one of the many people who laments the “channel drift” that has affected MTV. A network that started out as, well, “music television” has clearly become “anything but music television.” There’s even a graph now on GraphJam the depicts how The Real World caused the downfall of MTV. The graph shows how the airtime for music videos has decreased as The Real World grew in popularity. Perhaps it should also measure how the cast of The Real World became more attractive and subsequently less intelligent.
The graph posits that by 2010 music videos will be nonexistent on the channel. Also, interesting is the rise of what the graph calls simply “other crap” that coincides with the rise of shows like The Real World and Road Rules. I assume “other crap” refers to shows like The Hills, My Super Sweet Sixteen, and Made — shows that have replaced music videos in primetime (and replaced music videos with their incessant reruns in daytime). Review: Wanted

If Timur Bekmambetov is the Russian David Fincher, then Wanted is his Fight Club: bloody, brutal, funny, lightly satirical, and all about a nobody who shakes himself from his reverie and becomes a real man. There aren’t many deep themes here (not as many as there are supposed to be, anyway), but who cares? The stylized violence and unapologetically ludicrous action sequences are the selling point, and Wanted delivers those by the blood-soaked truckload.
‘Top Gun’ Bar Destroyed

On the heels of the terrible Universal Studios fire comes word of another landmark motion picture location gone up in flames. San Diego’s Kansas City Barbeque, which can be seen in Top Gun (watch one of its memorable scenes, dubbed in Italian, above), was been gutted by a fire that started yesterday in an open cooking pit. According to the AP article reporting on the fire, the restaurant was used for the scene in which Maverick (Tom Cruise) first picks up Charlie (Kelly McGillis) by singing “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” but this is incorrect (that scene was shot in Coronado, at the Officer’s Club at Naval Air Station North Island). Kansas City Barbeque was used for the above scene in which Goose (Anthony Edwards) and Maverick are singing “Great Balls of Fire,” as well as the final scene when “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” is playing on the jukebox.
Lindsay Lohan’s dad may have fathered a love child
June 28, 2008

Lindsay Lohan might have a sister she never knew about it. Her dad Michael Lohan reveals that he’d a brief relationship with a woman while he was separated from Dina. Recently, the woman wrote him a letter that claims he’s the father of her child who’s now 13. While most respectable men like myself would’ve hightailed it to the Yukon, Michael is embracing the notion of a new daughter. And most likely planning his own reality show: “Thank God I Didn’t Wear a Condom Idol.” OK! Magazine reports:
In a statement to OK!, Michael says, “Years later [the woman] contacted me, convincing me that I was the only person she was with and that she had my child.”
In fact, OK! has seen letters Michael wrote to the girl’s mom where he states that his secret daughter “is beginning to look a lot like Linds, with a mix of [younger brother] Cody, believe it or not.” He also sent his daughter a photograph of himself while he was still in Collins Correctional Facility which he signed “Love Daddy.”
