Stars in Rewind: Female Assassins
June 30, 2008
Filed under: Action, Trailers and Clips, Stars in Rewind
Tonight, the screens will be full of James McAvoy and his Wanted co-stars bending bullet paths and pulling off funky tricks usually relegated to superheroes. The storyline sounds a lot like The Matrix, but luckily that also means keeping one of the previous flick’s best features: a tough-arse female mentor. Tonight, Angelina Jolie will put aside her drama and revel in toughness and assassin death, but she’s not the only one to do so.

Katy Perry Makes a Turn on Daytime TV Drama

Singer Katy Perry can now add “actress” to her resume as an entertainer. The young pop star, who had already made a splash with the singles ‘Ur So Gay’ and ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ appeared on the CBS daytime drama ‘The Young and the Restless.’ In the episode, Perry played herself posing for the cover of Restless Style magazine.
“They’re saying ‘Ooh, she’s edgy,’” Perry tells AOL Music about her soap opera stint. “Yeah, I’m edgy!” At first she wasn’t sure if this was her type of audience when she concurred to come on ‘The Young and the Restless.’ “Then I heard that Snoop Dogg did [’One Life to Live’],” she says, “and I was like, ‘If Snoop Dogg’s gonna do it, [then] he’s my standard in life.’”

Why You Should Watch: The former Poison frontman displays his classic hard rock swagger in this video for the theme song to ‘Rock of Love’. Apart from being featured on ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’, the riff-heavy tune appears on the upcoming ‘Rock of Love’ soundtrack, titled ‘Rock My World.’
Mary-Kate Olsen throws Spencer Pratt under the bus on Letterman
June 30, 2008

Mary-Kate Olsen stopped by Letterman last night to promote her new film The Wackness where she talked about spending her 22nd birthday at Bonnaroo, making out with Ben Kinglsey and not wanting her children to be child actors. She then brought up going to high school with Spencer Pratt who Dave mentioned is a tiny “wormy.” I guess that’s showbiz talk for “epic assclown.” Good to know:
Mary-Kate: He does not have a good temper. He walked out of a few games. He would walk off the field. He was like, ‘Me or the coach!’
Dave: Were you friends with the guy at the time?
Mary-Kate: No.
Dave: Because I’m surprised about the soccer. Because looking at the guy, he looks like a guy that has never broken a sweat, I would guess.
Mary-Kate: Oh, my God — that brings up stories! I don’t know if I should speak about it.
Dave: No, c’mon, let’s hear one. Let’s go.
Mary-Kate: [laughs] The Wackness is a great film.
Dave: What I don’t comprehend is how does a kid that age, and he’s only in his 20s or maybe even your age, how does a kid like that get to be so oily?
Mary-Kate: It’s a mystery to me.

Watch for the ‘Quantum of Solace’ Trailer Monday

Okay everybody, gird your loins. MGM is unveiling the theatrical trailer for Quantum of Solace — a.k.a. James Bond 22, if this is your first time on the internet — at 9 a.m. Pacific on Monday, June 30th. The trailer will be attached to Hancock, which comes out a mere two days later, but you’ll be able to see it early over at Moviefone on this page. Of course, we’ll let you know as soon as it’s up.
I remember that the start of the good buzz on Casino Royale roughly coincided with the release of its terrific teaser trailer — the one that began in black and white, with a Judi Dench voiceover — so I trust they’re putting a lot of love and effort into this one in the hopes of having another runaway hit on their hands. The project has taken a bit of a beating in the press, what with the on-set tragedies and much-ridiculed title, but I suspect once people see footage, they’ll come around. The blogosphere’s love affair with Daniel Craig is far from over.
BSG podcast recap: Episodes 408, 411 & 412 commentary

Now that the show is over (for the time being), Ronald D. Moore got back with releasing podcasts this week. However, he seems to have skipped a couple in the middle.
As I’ve done in the past, I’ll just summarize some of what I thought were the more interesting parts of the podcasts. If you’re interested in learning more about Moore’s insights and details about each episode, you really should take the time to listen to the podcasts yourself. Now if only someone could sync up these podcasts with the Hulu videos, that would be awesome.

A bit of math tells me that after this weekend, 2008 will be halfway over. But here at The (Mostly) Indie Film Calendar, we prefer to think that 2008 has only halfway begun. There are still six months left to participate in the many cool film-related events that happen every week outside the nation’s multiplexes! If you know of something coming up — special screenings, retrospectives, mini-festivals, etc. — send me a link! My e-mail is Eric.Snider (at) Weblogsinc (dot) com.
This week, even if WALL-E is what you’ve always Wanted, try to make room in your life for these…
Jesse McCartney vs. Leona Lewis in ‘Bleeding Love’ Battle
June 29, 2008
The summer hit ‘Bleeding Love’ is being made hugely popular by new-comer Leona Lewis, though it was actually penned by fellow pop-stars Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic.
McCartney not only co-wrote the tune, but also recorded his own version, and the audio has recently been circulating around the web. Sans the slick pop production and club-ready beats of Lewis’ take, his original recording has a slow, stripped-down R&B vibe. Would McCartney’s version of ‘Bleeding Love’ be just as much of a smash on the charts as Leona Lewis’ take on it?
